On the New Hind of the Matunga Gymkhana in Mumbai, young players return home after listening to their coach's end-of-session speech. The coach rents out the training space and pays himself by the hour. The word "Gymkhana" was borrowed from Hindi or Urdu during the period of the British Raj in India, and means palestra, sports hall or palm court.

It's a Saturday like any other on the Cross Maidan in the historic Churchgate district of south Mumbai. At 8 o'clock in the morning, drummers pound out their beats, protected by nets set up at dawn by paid employees who sleep there. Cross Maidan (formerly Parade Ground) is a vast expanse of land in the Churchgate district of Mumbai. Originally, the whole of Mumbai's southern peninsula consisted of a gigantic area that had been cleared for military purposes and where local residents came to walk or work out. The term maidan means "playground" in Marathi and is a word of Persian origin referring to a public square, a shopping mall or any other gathering place. It has been translated into several languages, including Turkish, Arabic and Ukrainian.

A group of players pace back and forth across a pitch at the Vasoo Paranjape Cricket Academy during the physical part of their training session. There are many academies in Mumbai, run by local coaches. Many former players also run academies, but those with their own grounds and adequate facilities will only be a handful. The others are all set up on the maidans.
